Management of Asbestos in Borough Council Properties

Under the terms of the Control of Asbestos  Regulations 2006 the Borough Council has responsibility to manage any asbestos that is located in its buildings.

As part of this responsibility the Borough Council has produced an Asbestos Register.  This details where asbestos is located and it also details what condition the asbestos is in, what works have been carried out that may have affected it and a record of when any has been removed, including certification.

In the course of producing this register, surveys where carried out to all the Borough Council's properties to identify whether asbestos was present.  Where asbestos is present and is in a good condition but is unlikely to be disturbed it has been left "in situ" but has been labelled to highlight that asbestos is present.  Where asbestos is in a reasonable condition the material has been retained and sealed or "encapsulated" to protect against accidental disturbance. It has also been labelled to highlight that asbestos is present. Where asbestos was in a poor condition it was removed so the risk was eliminated.
