Shrewsbury and Atcham won the award in April 2006 under the Beacon round seven theme Culture and Sport for Hard to Reach Groups.

The Beacon Scheme identifies excellence and innovation in local government.  The scheme exists to share good practice enabling best authorities to act as Beacons for other councils.

In total 239 applications were received from 185 authorities for round seven of the Beacon Scheme. Only eight authorities in the country were granted Beacon Status for Culture and Sport.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council was awarded Beacon status on the strengths of using Sport and Culture as an economic driver.  Making a difference with facilities using external finance, creating employment and opportunities for local people and tourists alike. Shrewsbury & Atcham is setting the right environment for investment.

Clear political leadership is strategically embedded.  Shrewsbury has a different approach to using Sport and Culture to change the economic profile of the district, supporting a bottom up approach to community cohesion as part of a long-term vision.
