Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a precious landscape whose distinctive character and natural beauty are so outstanding that it is in the nation's interest to safeguard them.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council contains part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - The Shropshire Hills, 802 square kilometres, extend from the Wrekin to the Clun Forest and from the Stiperstones across to the Clee Hills.
Details of Policies controlling development within AONBs are :-
- The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000
- SABC Borough Local Plan - Policy LNC9
The Shropshire Hills AONB Partnership is a non-statutory consultee with regard to planning policies and decisions and will comment on major developments which are likely to have a significant effect on the natural beauty of the AONB, e.g. large tourism, industrial or transport developments, significant schemes for housing, energy generation or telecommunications.
