Building Conservation Grants 

Building Conservation Grants are offered in partnership with English Heritage and are aimed at encouraging the regeneration of economically struggling areas within the town, through traditional repairs to historic buildings. The specific areas of the Town Centre Conservation Area targetted by the scheme are

  • Mardol and adjacent shuts
  • St Michael's Street and Castle Foregate
  • Wyle Cop : including St Julian's Friars
  • Frankwell : including New Street
  • The Square: including Princess Street
  • St Alkmund's Square and Butcher Row
  • Castle Street and Castle Gates

A contribution of 40% can be offered towards the eligible expense of approved repairs to the structure and fabric of buildings of historic and architectural interest. Works normally eligible to receive grant aid include: structural repairs such as underpinning, repairs to the roof structure, re-roofing, rainwater goods, external joinery, chimneys, walls, floors, damp proofing and timber treatment.

Reinstatement works are also eligible to receive grant; in such cases there must be clear evidence of the original feature to be re-instated, in order to be considered for grant aid. In addition, the scheme also covers environmental works such as paving, landscaping.

Application Process

The Application form should be completed together with a detailed schedule of work, quotations and current photographs of the property or scheme if available. The application should be submitted to

A site visit will then be arranged to advise applicants on the eligibility of the proposed work and the availability of funds.
