Service Statement

The activities of the service include:

• Advising Council Departments, the general public and developers on Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas, general conservation and Tree Preservation Orders.
• Providing advice to the Development Control Manager on Listed Buildings and Conservation Area Consent Applications
• Providing support to the Development Control Manager on Architectural, Urban and Landscape Design by commenting on Planning Applications.
• Preparing and implementing conservation and landscaping policies
• Reviewing the boundaries of Conservation areas and promoting enhancement schemes
• Administering a range of grant schemes including grants from economic regeneration through conservation for listed buildings and structures within conservation areas
• Offering expert advice on the repairs and maintenance of historic buildings and protected trees.
• The management of a sustainable conservation store offering materials for the repair of historic buildings
• The Conservation Section also maintains a library of products and specialist services for the conservation of historic buildings and can also offer information and advice about hard and soft landscape design.

The Conservation section, under the direction of the Head of Conservation and Design is responsible for giving advice on the preservation and enhancement of buildings of special architectural or history interest within the Borough. The section is also responsible for the management of Conservation Areas,  protected trees, and hedgerows of significant historic/wildlife value and advising on matters of  landscape design, building archaeology, building repairs and building design.

Guidance notes for residents living in Listed Buildings or Conservation Areas are available online or on request from the Conservation Section or from Reception at the Guildhall.
