Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a Sundry Debt?

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council collects many other debts besides Council Tax and Business Rates, one of which is usually in the form of an invoice - i.e. charges for work carried out such as commercial refuse or for the recovery of an overpayment of housing benefit.

How does the Income Section know how much I should pay?

Each invoice raised is upon the instruction of the relevant department. That instruction includes the amount to be repaid as well as what the charge is for.

Do I have to pay the invoice at once?

The full amount of the invoice is due normally upon receipt of the actual invoice. In exceptional circumstances, such as financial hardship, allowances may be made for the invoice to be repaid in regular instalments.

Where can I pay my invoice?

There is a choice of ways to pay your Sundry Debtor invoice. Please see our methods of payment by using the following link: How to pay

What happens if the invoice isn't paid?

If you don't pay or if you fail to maintain a special arrangement, the Council will take further action to recover the amount owed. This could be in one of the following ways:

  • Refer the invoice to an outside collection agency
  • Instruct the Department of Work and Pensions to make deductions from your Benefit entitlement (in cases of Overpayment of Housing Benefit)
  • Apply for a County Court Judgment, which will be registered against you and may affect your credit rating. This will cost you more money, as you will be liable for the court fee and costs.

Who can I contact about my invoice?

Alternatively, you can contact us in writing, email (revenues@shrewsbury.gov.uk) or visiting the Council Offices.

Where can I get further information?

If you think you may be entitled to financial assistance, the

will be able to help you, or for more information about benefits, contact the

or the Council's Housing Benefit Department.
