Revised Planning Application Submitted for Theatre Severn
September 2006 - Planning permission granted
As work continues finalising the Theatre Severn design ready for construction to commence, a revised planning application has been submitted. Building on the information supplied in the application of June 2005, the revised application amendments and improvements including the rationalisation of external materials used, and details the protection and preservation of St George's Bridge using data from the recent archaeological and site investigations.
Ian Kilby, Head of Conservation and Design at SABC commented on the application:
"We have been working with the project team to improve the design of the new theatre both operationally and aesthetically. Whilst the original scheme was considered acceptable, the design has been amended to reduce the complexity of materials and finishes resulting in a building with more purity incorporating abstract shapes and yet remaining contextual to its location.
The design clearly expresses the functions of the building and utilises materials that reflect the industrial aesthetic that once characterised Frankwell Quay, with stone, brick, timber, metal and glass providing a colour and texture palette redolent of the area.
The public spaces have been opened up and more emphasis given to the entrances. A greater level of transparency has been achieved by removing the louvres from the foyer spaces opening views right through from Frankwell to the river. We are continuing to work with Austin-Smith: Lord to resolve some of the details but I am excited by the way in which the Chapel will be incorporated within the building and the efforts made to relate the theatre to historic buildings in Frankwell and Frankwell Quay."
