Dog Fouling
What can you do about dog fouling?
Dog fouling is both unpleasant and potentially dangerous, as dog faeces carry bacteria that can harm children.
SABC has adopted the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, which represents a major weapon in our armoury against this problem. It allows for increased level of fines, and covers any open space accessible by the public.
The Council cannot prevent dog fouling, but we can encourage dog owners to be more responsible. We have developed a campaign of posters to remind owners of the need to clean up after their dog.
It is an offence, punishable by a fine, to allow a dog to foul the footpath or any other area designated as dog free.
How can I complain about dog fouling?
If you find and area is subject to severe or persistent fouling by dogs, please let us know. You can report this to the Public Amenities department.
We will investigate, take any necessary action to clean up the area and, where possible, deal with the cause of the problem. If we agree that the area falls short of the required standard, we will bring the area back up to standard within 2 days - sooner if the legislation requires a more rapid response.
