Waste Reduction

Waste reduction, or waste prevention as it is sometimes called, is the activity of minimising the amount of rubbish you generate in the first place. Reducing the waste you generate is even better for the environment than recycling and re-using your rubbish as this using significantly less energy and resources.

Some people feel responsibility for waste creation lies with manufacturers, but they are only producing what will sell and the message that gets through to producers is through buying power. If you make informed choices when buying items you can send a message asking for less packaging.

If you choose refillable and rechargeable goods rather than disposable ones you will immediately make a difference to the amount of waste your household generates. The type of products that can be refilled or recharged include batteries, some household cleaning products and toiletries from certain shops. Another advantage is that often these alternatives are also cheaper too.

One of the most effective approaches to waste minimisation is home composting. This could remove atleast 1/3 of the waste from your bin. If you would like to buy a heavily discounted home compost bin visit the Home composting section of the Recycle Now website. An alternative option for home composting is to look into getting a 'Green Cone' system.
