Recycling 4 Schools
As the next generation of householders, it is crucially important that we educate children to care for their environment at an early age. We want the younger residents of the borough to get used to a way of life in which reducing, reusing and recycling waste is second nature. We hope to achieve this through education and promotional work with schools, groups and the general public.
Schools waste is exempt from being considered commercial waste, so it is perfectly acceptable for schools to use all of the Council's domestic recycling services. We recommend you undertake a risk assessment before allowing children to recycle glass. Call 01743 281155 to get a green box and you can also recycle glass, cans, textiles and batteries using the kerbside box collection scheme.
Some other ideas on how you can do your bit....
- By collecting aluminium cans, from the kitchens, canteen and staff rooms your school could raise money. Aluminium is a valuable material that can be recycled many times over without losing its original qualities. Thinkcans and Alupro have useful information about aluminium and its recycling process.
- If your school has gardens consider a compost bin or wormery. Contact Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council and we may be able to help provide compost bins for state schools. Contact the SABC Waste Management team on (01743) 251155 to claim yours. Compost bins can be used to make quality compost from organic kitchen and garden waste. This can used as a teaching tool for science, food technology and the citizenship areas of the curriculum.
There are many different sizes and styles of bins available and many good websites offering knowledge and support about composting.
- A children's scrap store within Shropshire. This is open to organisations where children or their supervisors can pay a subscription and make use of the Aladdin's cave of materials on offer for craft activities.
Visit Scrappies or call them to learn more about the great work they do on 01694 722511.
