Frequently Asked Questions

From October 2007 we will only collect garden waste set out for collection in Council issued green wheelie bins, unless you have made special arrangements with us to use bags.

What can be put into the garden waste recycling collection?

Plant derived materials from your garden, including:

  • Flowers
  • Plants
  • Leaves
  • Weeds
  • Grass
  • Bark
  • Twigs
  • Windfall fruit.

Cardboard is now also collected, simply leave it in your garden waste bin.

What can NOT be put into the garden waste recycling collection?

  • General Rubbish
  • Garden Tools
  • Chemicals
  • Plant Pots
  • Plastic
  • Faeces
  • Toys
  • Soil
  • Kitchen Waste

You must NOT include kitchen waste such as vegetable peelings as the compost produced is used on farmland, kitchen waste would mean that there would be a risk of transmitting disease to farm animals.

Where else can I dispose of my garden waste?

You can take garden waste to the Battlefield Waste Management facility.

You might wish to consider home composting.

How should I leave my garden waste?

Collections are made every 2 weeks (please see the Garden Waste Collection Day Finder).

What happens to the garden waste that is removed?

The waste is composted and is used on farmland.

Can I buy the compost produced?

No. The council is trying to keep costs to a minimum, to set up facilities to sell the compost would increase the costs.

What happens over Christmas?

Please note over Christmas, the crews do not collect on Boxing Day or New Years Day.  As a result of this during these weeks, all collections will be a day behind, for one week only whilst the crews catch up.
