Main Progressive Levels for Swimming Instruction

Parent and Infant Lesson

Aim

The accompanying adult must achieve six practical skills and demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of practical water safety, handling and support. Special quiet session, qualified staff in attendance to give assistance and advice - suitable for mum or dad and infants nil to 3 years.

Age

Infant up to the age of 3 years.

Duration

Ongoing weekly ˝ hour sessions.

Toddler Splash Lesson

Aim

Structured lesson to build water confidence and provide fun. An opportunity to achieve Duckling Awards Grades 1- 5. Suitable for unaccompanied pre-school children aged 3-5 yrs - qualified staff enter the water with the children.

3 - 5 years (pre school).

Duration

Ongoing weekly ˝ hour sessions.

Non Swimmer

Aim

Early confidence and movement skills with an introduction to stroke development, 5 metres on front and back without aids. To achieve National Swim Levels 1-2.

Age

Minimum 4˝yrs.

Duration

10 x half hour sessions.

Beginner

Prerequisite

Non Swimmer. Ability to swim 5m on front and back.

Aim

Early confidence and movement skills with an introduction to stroke development, 10 metres on front and back without aids. To achieve National Swim Levels 3-4.

Age

Minimum 5 yrs (unless completed Non Swimmer).

Duration

10 x ˝ hour sessions.

Improver 1

Prerequisite

Beginner. Ability to swim 10 metres on front and back.

Aim

An introduction to basic skills and swimming strokes, 10m front crawl, breast stroke and back crawl. To achieve National Swim Levels 5-6.

Age

Minimum 5 yrs.

Duration

10 x ˝ hour sessions.

National Curriculum Link

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 10 metres competently.

Aim

To improve stamina and water confidence to enable a child to swim further - 25m, and to teach National Curriculum Syllabus.

Improver 2

Prerequisite

National Curriculum/Link. Ability to swim 25 metres.

Aim

An introduction to basic skills and swimming strokes, 25m front crawl, breast stroke and back crawl, 10m butterfly. To achieve National Swim Levels 7-8.

Minimum 5 yrs.

Duration

10 x ˝ hr sessions.

Advanced 1

Prerequisite

Improver 2. Ability to swim 50 metres.
 
AIM: Development of aquatic skills and swimming strokes, 50m on each of two strokes showing efficient technique throughout, 25m on each of the other two strokes showing efficient technique, learning use of correct turns. To achieve National Swim Levels 9-10.

Advanced 2

Prerequisite

Advanced 1. Ability to swim 150 metres.

Aim

Development of aquatic skills and swimming strokes. A combination of stamina and efficient technique must be shown. Learning of correct racing starts. To achieve National Swim Levels 11-12.

Adult Instruction

Adult Learn to Swim

Aim

To teach adults to swim. Every effort is made to teach a recognisable stroke over a period of 10 sessions.

Adult Stroke Improvement, Skills and Stamina

Aim

To introduce and develop your stroke - following on from Learn to Swim. This is an ideal opportunity to improve confidence, stamina and basic stroke technique. To achieve Skills/Stamina Award Grades 1-5.

Minimum 16 yrs.

Duration

1 week (5 x ˝ hr sessions).

Holiday Instruction

Preliminary Water Safety Award

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 10m.

Aim

To introduce basic safety skills and helps youngsters to be aware of the dangers surrounding water.

Minimum 5 yrs.

1 week (5 x ˝ hr sessions).

Water Rescue Award

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 50m.

Aim

Gives pupils a basic insight into lifesaving techniques.

Age

Minimum 5 yrs.

Water Skills Grade 1

Aim

To introduce children to water. To give them water confidence with the use of buoyancy aids. To swim 5m on front and back.

Water Skills Grade 2

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 25m competently.

Aim

To improve water skills, confidence and stamina.

Water Skills Grade 3

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 50m competently.

Aim

To improve water skills, stroke technique and stamina.

Water Skills Grade 4

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 100m.

Aim

To improve stamina, stroke technique, water skills and confidence.

Water Skills Grade 5

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 150m.

Aim

To improve the pupil's ability for speed and stamina over longer distances and to continue with the water skills.

Water Skills Grade 6

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 200m.

Aim

All strokes must be of good technique and comply with A.S.A. Law. Plus an introduction to plunge dives.

A.S.A. Bronze Challenge Award

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 400m.

Aim

This is a challenge award and tests skills and stamina.

Age

Minimum 5 yrs.

1 week (5 x ˝ hr sessions).

A.S.A. Silver Challenge Award

Prerequisite

To have passed Bronze, ability to swim 800m.

Aim

This is another challenge award, more difficult than the Bronze, which incorporates more skills and is a test for stamina, especially swimming on the back using good technique.

Minimum 5 yrs.

1 week (5 x 1 hr sessions).

A.S.A. Gold Challenge Award

Prerequisite

To have passed Silver, ability to swim 800m.

Aim

This is another challenge award, more difficult than the Silver, which incorporates more skills and is a test for stamina showing good technique in three strokes.

A.S.A. Honours Challenge Award

Prerequisite

To have passed Gold, stroke technique must be good.

Aim

A challenge to stretch the skills of the child.

Basic Canoe Course

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 50m competently.

Aim

To use the swimming pool advantages of a warm environment and clear disinfected water to inspire confidence in the novice canoeist in the following skills:
  1. Introduction to equipment, canoe, paddle and spray deck.
  2. Entrance to and exit from a canoe.
  3. Paddling techniques, backwards, forwards and sideways.
  4. Rescues.
  5. Eskimo rolls.

Minimum 8 yrs.

Stroke Improvement - Front Crawl

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 25m competently or to have completed Improver 2.

Aim

To develop the technique for front crawl from a basic to an efficient stroke.

Stroke Improvement - Breast Stroke

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 25m competently or to have completed Improver 2.

Aim

To develop the technique for breast stroke from a basic to an efficient stroke.

Stroke Improvement - Back Crawl

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 25m competently or to have completed Improver 2.

Aim

To develop the technique for back crawl from a basic to an efficient stroke.

Stroke Improvement - Butterfly

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 25m competently or to have completed Improver 2.

Aim

To develop the technique for butterfly from a basic to an efficient stroke.

Water Polo Awards

Prerequisite

Ability to swim 50m competently.

Aim

Designed to introduce pupils to the basic skills of the game.
