Parish of Upton Magna
There was a settlement at Upton Magna before, during and after Roman occupation. The church is Saxon/Norman in origin, the tower was built in 1475 and is an excellent example of perpendicular architecture. There is a mix of new and old houses in the village, some timbered. One is said to be the oldest house in Europe with timbers dating back to 1269. The school has about 130 pupils and is in a modern building. There is a public house, The Corbet Arms, and a village hall where many activities take place. The post office has closed, but it is hoped to open another one in the not too distant future.
After the last war there were approximately 150 people employed full time in the Parish. In recent years the number has fallen to virtually zero full time workers. Due to the diversification from agriculture and adaptation of farm buildings for light industry there have been approximately 30 jobs created. The development of the Grange Farm buildings to industrial units should create more jobs. The village has a blacksmith. It is hoped that Upton Magna will once again become a vibrant economic community.
