The Parish of Longden contains the settlements of Longden, Longden Common, Lower Common/Exfords Green, Annscroft, Lyth Bank/Lyth Hill and Hook-a-Gate and lies south-west of the Borough adjoining the urban area of Shrewsbury.

 

Longden is the largest settlement in the parish and is fairly well served by existing village facilities which include primary school, post office with shop, village hall, church and public house. There has been some fairly recent new housing development in the form of infill and an "affordable" housing scheme of six dwellings opposite The Rectory.

 

Longden Common is a small linear community along Longden Lane. It has no community facilities other than the public house on the Longden Road. Lower Common/Exfords Green is a scattered collection of small holdings, farms and dwellings all of a mixture of housing ages and types. There is a small engineering works located in a group of flat roofed buildings in the northern part of the settlement. Annscroft is a linear settlement with ribbon development spreading along northernside of Longden Road and situated approximately six kms from Shrewsbury and apart from the church there are no other facilities. Hook-a-Gate is situated five kms from Shrewsbury and most of the built form lies either side the Longden Road and has two public houses.

 

Lyth Bank/Lyth Hill/Old Coppice are situated on high ground in open countryside at the top of Lyth Hill that overlooks the A49 and neither has any community facilities. Lyth Bank is a small collection of dwellings and Old Coppice forms a part of Lyth Hill and comprises a well screened low density housing estate. The developed area at the top of Lyth Hill contains a mixture of housing types. Access is in part over an unmetalled road, leading from the local beauty spot, and this is not suitable to take additional traffic from new development.
