World Environment Day in the Square – June 5th 2008

SABC, working in partnership with the Environment Agency, are co-ordinating a 'green gathering' in the Town Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday 5th June 2008.  The event will form part of a global series of awareness raising activities, which mark the United Nations World Environment Day.

It also coincides with the national Recycle Now Week, so there will be a big drive to promote recycling in particular but also stalls will highlight other ways to reduce your carbon footprint with everything from solar panels, to bio-diesel and local food.  Across the globe millions of people will be united in their desire to improve the environment for everyone today and safeguard our planet for future generations. 

In Shrewsbury there will be lots of stalls in the Square showcasing how people can lead a more environmentally sensitive lifestyle.  The event involves many local agencies, and businesses including; 

  • The Environment Agency – national statutory body - The leading public organisation for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales - they will be giving away free reusable carrier bags & showcasing their work to protect our environment
  • Keep Shropshire Warm – local fuel poverty alleviation scheme promoting the uptake of grants to help people save money on their heating and electricity costs
  • Veolia Environmental Services - run waste management services across the County including refuse collection, recycling, waste treatment and disposal.
  • Gobehuggers.com – local online eco-retailers displaying their green gadgets
  • Marches Energy Agency – with their 'Light Fantastic' solar powered trailer educating the public about climate change
  • SABC Recycling Services – advice on recycling and waste reduction.
  • Shropshire Energy Advice Centre – free low energy light bulbs and advice on how to cut your energy consumption.
  • Shropshire Master Composters – free seeds to give away, info promoting home composting and the uptake of discounted low cost compost bins.
  • Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth – local volunteer group campaigning on green issues.
  • Cae Post – local recycling charity, they run some of Powys County Councils recycling collection services.
  • Llani Solar – local renewable energy installers exhibiting the latest in solar hot water evacuated tube technology.
  • Cartridge World Shrewsbury – promoting the use of reusable ink cartridges.
  • Box Fresh Organics – local firm promoting their organic fruit & veg home delivery scheme.
  • Shropshire Wildlife Trust – showcasing their efforts to protect our local biodiversity.
  • Shropshire Real Nappy Network / Lollipop Nappies – exhibiting real / reusable cloth nappies and green childcare accessories.
  • Greyhound Rescue charity – even better than recycling is reuse, as such they will be selling bric-a-brac on their stall to raise funds for this charity.

There will also be live acoustic guitar music to add some atmosphere.  So why not come along?
