From June onwards a joint initiative by SABC and the Police will focus on people who insist on dropping litter whether it is paper wrappers, cigarettes, chewing gum, or rubbish thrown from a car.
Over 80 Community Support Officers and Council Officers will be available to issue on the spot fines to anyone who discards litter on the street or out of a car. It is an offence under the Clean Neighbourhoods Environment Act 2005 to deposit litter with a Fixed Penalty notice of £80 due or £50 if paid within 14 days.
The Police, Community Support Officers, Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council and the remainder of Shropshire Boroughs and District Councils are joining forces for the campaign. Both the Police and local authorities will be issuing the fines and SABC will process the tickets.
Inspector Kim Downing said:
“We are pleased to be working with the Borough and District Councils in Shropshire on this issue.” Keeping our streets clean currently costs Shropshire over a million pounds a year. “We hope to discourage irresponsible people from throwing their litter over our streets and our beautiful countryside.”
Judith Williams the portfolio holder for Waste and Cleansing fully supports this latest proactive approach to catching the culprits. She commented:
“People who irresponsibly chuck litter and chewing gum on to our street deserve to be fined and we hope that it sets an example to discourage others from following suit”
