Tidy Shrewsbury Group making a difference

Release Date: 12 June 2008

The Tidy Shrewsbury Group goes from strength to strength and now has 31 volunteers representing individual wards around the Borough. Besides the extremely valuable work and litter picks carried out by the Tidy Shrewsbury Group members and volunteers they also undertake regular surveys on litter etc.

The group meets on a regular basis and frequently highlight local litter hot spots as part of their feedback role with the Borough Council.

Derek Caddy, Public Amenities Manager at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council said:

"We actively support the litter picks and clean ups carried out by local residents and recognise the valuable contribution they make."

A regular education campaign is undertaken each year for schools up to year 7, first year secondary pupils. This valuable work is linked wherever possible to the schools curriculum and highlights the subject of litter and the environment and its impact on society.

Lately the group has been working closely with the Council on the issue of chewing gum disposal and cigarette butts with a regular update on areas affected by litter, gum etc. A sub group has been formed to consider how best to tackle this anti-social problem. They have also been lobbying the Council to issue fines for littering and were the catalyst in the recent deployment of CSO’s to assist in issuing Fixed Penalty Notices within Shropshire.

Ron Iremonger, Chairman of the Tidy Shrewsbury Group commented:

"Our members regularly pick litter in their respective areas and direct the Borough Council to litter hot spots, we are pleased with the co-operative relationship with the Council that has evolved since our formation. The group also acts to lobby key individuals regarding enforcement of litter law and the cost of clearing litter, in excess of £700,000 per annum for the Borough and something like £600 million nationally. We recently had a meeting with our MP, Daniel Kawczynski, to discuss the problem of litter and were encouraged by his response."

The Mayor of Shrewsbury and Atcham, Councillor Anne Chebsey, recently provided a reception for group members in recognition of their contribution to the well-being and cleanliness of the Borough.
