Shrewsbury River Partnership Launched

Release Date: 17 April 2008

Shrewsbury River Partnership has been formed to take forward the recently completed River Study. The group which undertook the study has been widened with four new members: Mike Cox (River Management, SABC), John Harrison (Sustainability, SCC), Roger Carswell (Anglers Federation and SHRUG) and Vic Edwards (SHRUG). The group met for the first time this week to discuss and progress the River Report, accepted and approved by the Borough Council, to promote greater usage of the river.

The Chairman, Graham Galliers commented:

"Several priorities within the Report have been endorsed by the group and we are currently awaiting costings to enable us to move forward within our designated budget of £150,000 to spend on river improvements and an Action Plan. Every member of the newly widened group is committed to working together to deliver a sustainable plan to enhance use of the river, improve footpaths, support an ongoing maintenance programme and see some positive improvements to the river in 2008."

Councillor Judith Williams, SABC River Portfolio Holder commented:

"In addition to taking forward an Action Plan the Council is addressing several maintenance issues such as tackling the Japanese Knotweed problem, various tree works, improving river signs and an aerial survey to provide detailed mapping of the river"
