Release Date: 30/06/2008

Shrewsbury new purpose built Indoor Bowls centre located at the Shrewsbury Sports Village, has been awarded £18,000 by Sport England from the National Lottery Community Investment Fund.

The grant award will be used to provide an infrastructure of bowls coaching specifically targeted at women, young girls and those within the community with special needs and or disabilities.

Equipment provision will include two specially designed buggies for use by the disabled available on request and at no cost

Alan Wallin, Leisure and Community Development Manager for the borough council said:

“It is very pleasing that Sport England have once again chosen to endorse and financially support a project on behalf of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council. The addition of the indoor Bowls Centre within the Shrewsbury Sports Village has already demonstrated its value in attracting a far wider range of users to the facility as a whole.

Chris Child, Partnership Manager for Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the County Sports Partnership commented:

"We are delighted that the Shrewsbury Indoor Bowls project has received lottery funding support as we believe it could make a real difference to the quality of local people’s lives.  Bowls is a great sport which can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities and we look forward to hearing of the projects success in making this a reality."

Rauf Mirza, Chair, Regional Sports Board, said:

"There have been some fantastic news sports facilities opened in Shrewsbury, the indoor bowls centre being one of them. It is important to link any new facility with good sports development, this National Lottery award from Sport England's Community Investment Fund is being made to ensure this is achieved.

“The project's target group of 'the hard to reach' should find it a good sport to get involved in. I look forward to receiving news of the project and congratulate everyone involved in receiving this award."

A programme of coaching and bowling activities will be provided over a three year period, which it is hoped will encourage more people to take up the sport of bowls.
