Through the Doorway to Healthy Living and Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council’s Reccy Ranger Play Van will be out and about daily between 10am and 5.45pm throughout the summer holidays, providing play opportunities for children and young people between 4 and 15 years of age. We will be working throughout Shrewsbury and will also be visiting Bayston Hill, Bomere Heath, Crosshouses, Ford, Pontesbury and Westbury. The van will be in the local recreation areas or open green spaces for up to 2-hour sessions. On Monday 4th August we will be teaming up with SABC Cultural services Arts Officer Maggie Love to provide a Funday Monday session in The Square. Our activities will include making dodo’s from modroc and we’ll be doing our own “Anthony Gormley” type activity where we will be encouraging people, young and old to create their own dodo’s from clay. These will then be displayed in Pride Hill (to be confirmed). The street sports van will also be present and we will be setting up our brand new mobile skate ramp. On Wednesday, 6th August we will be celebrating Playday 08 at Frankwell Recreation Area (County Cricket Ground) between 11am and 3.30pm and the day will include a bouncy castle, waterslide, den building and a messy play area as well as arts and crafts and games. We will also have the new halfpipe for any budding skateboarders to try out. Children and young people of all ages can come and join in the fun. It will be a good day out for all the family and it’s free of charge so come along and join us.
Dorothy Jones, SABC’s Play Development Officer said “Our main holiday programme is full of fun activities and we hope to see even more kids than last year come along and have fun. We’re really excited about the football tournaments, which are free to enter, and we have medals for the winning teams and trophies for player of the match and highest goal scorers. We’re holding tournaments all over the borough and our team are looking forward to some exciting football matches. This year we have received funding from The BIG Lottery Youth Fund to purchase a mobile halfpipe and the Reccy Ranger Street Sports staff are excited about this new piece of equipment which we’ve received just in time for the summer holidays.”
The Streetsports van will also be out and about daily between 1pm and 9pm providing a wide variety of informal sport. This year we have organised weekly five a-side football tournaments around the borough and we are looking forward to seeing lots of teams join in. Tournaments for under 14 year olds will take place between 1pm and 5pm and for 14 years and over will run between 5.45pm and 8.45pm. On Wednesday 30 July the tournament will be held at Roman Road Sports Centre so if you live in Belle Vue, Copthorne, Radbrook or Meole Brace come along and take part.”
