Reccy Ranger Street Sports Van Receive New Mobile Skate Ramp

Release Date: 18/07/2008

Through the Doorway to Healthy Living & Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council are delighted to announce they have received the new mobile skate ramps for the Street Sports van in time for the summer holidays. Through the Doorway to Healthy Living received £16,000 from the BIG Lottery Youth Fund to purchase the halfpipe, fit a tow bar to the Street Sports van and train staff and volunteers to use a trailer and fit the ramps.

Jeremy Haycox Street Sports leader says “The new ramps are fantastic and can be assembled anywhere. They can be used by both skaters and bmx riders alike and it’s a unique opportunity for riders to improve their skills on their own doorstep as we’ll be taking it into the villages and estates around Shrewsbury. It gives young people a chance to try something new. The street sports team are excited about the prospect of finding the next Tony Hawk or Dave Mirra somewhere in Shrewsbury.”

Dorothy Jones, Play Development Officer for Through the Doorway to Healthy Living and Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council said “It’s taken a while to get to this stage but it’s definitely been worth the wait. We are pleased to have the ramps in time for the summer holidays and hope to have them out and about so that local youngsters can try them out. The Reccy Ranger team will undergo training and we will be using them for the first time on Monday 4th August at the Magical Monday event in the Square, Shrewsbury, and again on Wednesday 6th August at Frankwell Recreation Area where we will be promoting “Skate Safe” which will encourage skateboarders to skate responsibly and considerably within their local communities. We will be using the halfpipe throughout the borough and it will be available to hire out for events in the area”

Alan Wallin, Head of Shrewsbury Leisure said “This is another valuable asset for the young people of the borough and will no doubt be very popular over the summer months.“
