Tomorrow morning (12th February) at noon a small crowd will gather to drink a toast to Charles Darwin on the occasion of his 199th birthday.
Gathering in the Morris Hall Courtyard beside the Bellstone, the group will be one of many around the world marking the anniversary.
An international campaign is gathering support to use Darwin’s birthday to celebrate the contribution of Science to Humanity. A Darwin Day website has been set up in California that contains a list of all the Darwin Day events around the world.
The Shrewsbury Darwin Festival Director Jon King will give the toast before leading a group on the Darwin Walk.
Speaking about the event, Jon King commented:
“Last year I was celebrating Darwin Day at Stanford University and I’ve already received greetings from staff at the university for this year. Next year will be Darwin’s 200th anniversary and interest in Shrewsbury is growing all the time.”
Members of the public are welcome to attend the ceremony though the walk is now fully booked. Owing to public demand, a second walk has been organised for the following day. To book call the box office on 01743 281 281.
