Funday Monday is Magic – 11/08/08 – 10:00 - 16:00

Release Date: 05/08/2008

‘Compost Mentis’ - a living breathing giant puppet-based compost heap - will fill half of The Square in Shrewsbury on Monday 11 August as part of a day of activities specially themed around composting, waste and ‘green’ issues.

Its all part of the series of ‘Funday Mondays’ happening every Monday throughout the summer holidays funded by Shrewsbury Summer Season.  Its part of a series of street theatre and artistic events taking place every Monday during the summer holidays – also known as 'Funday Mondays'.  This event has been organised in partnership with the council’s recycling section to help reinforce the links between art and the wider environment.

Presented by the Whalley Range All Stars, Compost Mentis is an open-air performance of puppetry and music which aims to teach people about the benefits of home composting.

Maggie Love, Arts Officer at SABC says of the show: “Compost Mentis is a fantastic tale for all the family. It features a large compost heap and the gardener who looks after it. Their relationship slowly begins to break down when it is discovered that the compost heap has a life of its own and harbours thoughts that are fermenting within.”

On the same day, SCRAPPIES, the Shropshire recycling charity, will surround the Clive Statue area in The Square and do activities that offer young and old alike the chance to make pretty things with junk.

Live acoustic music will also be performed in front of the Old Market Hall Arch during the day.  The area in the middle of The Square will be full with interesting and possibly interactive green exhibits.  There will also be creepy crawlies and other exotic animals on display.  Plus private and voluntary sector partners will be on hand to showcase their work supporting the Council’s aims to promote home composting and climate change awareness.

Cllr. Mrs. Judith Williams, Portfolio Holder for recycling at SABC, said: “I hope people can join us to raise awareness of waste and environmental issues generally in as fun, colourful and interactive a way as possible.”
