The sixth annual Shrewsbury Darwin Festival was hailed a success by organisers this week.
Highlights included around 100 children taking part in the bug-hunting event ‘The Monsters in Your Garden’ at the Shropshire Wildlife Headquarters in Abbey Foregate.
The lecture series was also well attended with contributors from the Natural History Museum and the Galapagos Conservation Trust.
This was the last festival before the bicentenary in 2009 when Shrewsbury aims to be at the centre of global celebrations.
An ambitious programme is being planned which includes 14 community arts projects and the unveiling of a Darwin Memorial Geo-Garden. There are also plans for monthly celebrity lectures throughout the year and an original play that will premiere at Shrewsbury Theatre Severn.
Speaking about the plans, SABC Darwin Co-ordinator Jon King said:
“A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes, now it’s time for the big push. I’d like to hear from event organisers across the county who may wish to include a Darwin or Natural History element in their event. I will be compiling a calendar to be published in July of this year and would urge people to come forward as soon as possible to gain the maximum publicity.”
