Darwin and Climate Change

Release Date:

30/01/2008

During this year’s Shrewsbury Darwin Festival, the special exhibition galleries at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery (Rowley’s House) will feature two exhibitions exploring aspects of Climate Change.

Greenhouse Britain is a touring exhibition created by eminent US ecological artists Helen Mayer and Newton Harrison and their British associates.  It is a multi-media exploration of the effect of rising sea levels on one crowded little island.  The Harrisons, pioneers of socially engaged contemporary art practice since the 1960s, will be guests of honour at a special free event at the Old Market Hall, Shrewsbury, 7.30pm on 26 February.

Greenhouse Shropshire ‘... like there’s no tomorrow’ has been
co-curated by David Haley, Research Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University and Project Manager for the Harrison Studio in the UK, and Shropshire-based Sheilagh Jevons, who has established a reputation both in the UK and abroad for her work as an artist and activist.  Their exhibition focuses on ‘local’, personal and sometimes unexpected responses to climate change.  It includes examples of their own work and items selected from the museum collections.

The exhibitions run from 2nd February – 1st March, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm.  Please note that the rest of the museum will not be open to the public during February.
