Compost Awareness Week 2008

Sunday 4th May – Saturday 10th May 2008 is national ‘compost awareness week’.  For more information visit http://www.compostawarenessweek.org.uk.  As such there will be a number of events in and around Shrewsbury to highlight the importance of home composting as a sustainable way to manage our waste. 

In the run up to this, Gardens & Leisure who own the Percy Thrower Garden Centre, will be helping to promote composting at their store on Otley Road, Shrewsbury.  On Saturday 3rd May 2008, from 10:00 - 16:00 look out for their ‘compost kiosk’.  Situated in the compost aisle the compost kiosk will offer a wealth of knowledge about peat-free compost containing recycled materials and home composting.  You can pick up free advice leaflets and receive free advice from their trained staff, as well as a free peat-free compost sample with a bulb to try at home.

Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council is supporting the campaign as part of its corporate objectives to promote environmental well being. 

Cllr. Mrs. Judith Williams, Portfolio Holder for recycling says “ SABC is urging residents to try home composting to help reduce landfill and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  As the town of flowers we know that composting as an excellent way to improve your garden and its also helping us to tackle the growing waste mountain ”.

At a local level a number of key partners such as the local authorities, the National Trust and the Shropshire Wildlife Trust are working together to help promote composting.  The Shropshire Master Composters (who are a volunteer group funded by Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council, WRAP, Veolia Environmental Services and Shropshire Waste Partnership) have organised a number of stalls to allow the public to drop in and receive face-to-face advice on all aspects of composting.

  • Tuesday, May 6th, The Darwin Shopping Centre, Shrewsbury (lower level, outside TK Maxx) 11 am to 3pm
  • Friday, May 9th, The Town Square, Shrewsbury. Compost celebration! Compost bins, worms, ecosacs, competitions and prizes, etc 10 am – 4 pm
  • Sunday, May 11th, 11 am – 4 pm - Attingham Plant Fair, Attingham Park, Atcham

They will also be urging the public to take advantage of the government subsidised home composting bin offer.  Residents across Shropshire can get a home-composting bin delivered to their door for just £17!  Just call 0845 077 0757 or visit www.recyclenow.com/compost

The Master Composters will also be having tea with Mayor on Wednesday 7th May at 10:30 and of course the tea bags will be going on the compost heap afterwards.
