Borough Planning Procedures to be streamlined

Release Date: 19 February 2008

SABC is consulting stakeholders on proposals that could see non-contentious planning applications being processed more quickly by delegated officers.

The idea is in line with practices adopted elsewhere in the County and allows Councillors to concentrate on more complex applications.

The primary objective is to maintain performance that provides applicants decisions in accordance with Government targets. Performance is measured in terms of the time taken to determine applications (8 weeks for most applications and 13 weeks for major applications).

The new scheme will allow all applications to be determined by the Planning Services Manager or authorised officers unless the application has to go to Committee under the new rules.

Councillor Judith Williams, Chairman of the Development Control and Environmental Protection Committee said:

"This has the potential to improve the efficiency of the Committee procedures and amending the delegation scheme will enable both officers and Councillors to prioritise their work for the overall long-term benefit of both applicants and interested parties."

Comments should be submitted to the Planning Services Manager at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council by 20th March 2008.
