J.S. Bach may not be known for his dance music but the group Red Priest aim to change all that at a concert in St Chad’s Church on the 18th of July.
Critics have described the virtuoso performers of Red Priest as “Electrifying”, “Brilliant” and “Inspired”.
In this programme ‘Johann, I’m Only Dancing’ Red Priest strike a balance between the commercialism of ‘pop-Bach’ and the austerity of ‘authentic’ Bach to create a new sort of ‘rock-chamber-Bach’. They have drawn repertoire from many different sources along the way, and the prime goal in their choice of pieces is to highlight Bach’s sublime ear for melody and harmony, and the infectious dance spirit which pervades so much of his work.
The title, stolen from a David Bowie hit (“John, I’m only dancing”) perhaps best sums up their entirely honourable intentions!
The music is performed largely from memory to create a spontaneous atmosphere. It promises to be an entertaining evening.
The concert begins at 7.30 p.m.
Tickets downstairs are £16, balcony seats are £11.
The box office number is 01743 281 281.
