Avoid The Cost Of Growing Fuel Bills With Keep Shropshire Warm

Release Date: 10/01/2008

Following the recent energy price hikes, households in Shropshire are being urged to avoid the cost of growing fuel bills by insulating their homes to help keep Shropshire warm (and at the same time help keep the planet temperate).

Keep Shropshire Warm is supported by Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council and can help households receiving benefits to receive access to government-funded grants for free cavity wall and loft insulation.  Free insulation is now also offered to people over the age of 70.  ‘Able to pay’ households that do not qualify for the free measures are nonetheless offered large discounts with up to £250 off the cost of insulation.

With fuel prices such as gas, rising by almost 15% in this latest round of price hikes (50% higher than a year ago, and electricity 61% higher than last year), managers of Keep Shropshire Warm are highlighted the risk of fuel poverty especially in rural areas where heating fuels are even more expensive.  They say that now is the ideal time to improve home insulation levels in order to ensure fuel bill savings and a more comfortable home through the winter months.

“An energy inefficient home means that many households in Shropshire are throwing away about £200 worth of heat from their dwellings every year. Keep Shropshire Warm can offer something for everyone, regardless of your circumstances to help reduce that excess cost.  We have some great deals on insulation and can offer free advice on how to reduce those energy bills further.” said Steve Winmill, Keep Shropshire Warm Officer.

Cllr. Mrs. Judith Williams, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Development at Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council added; "We would now urge people in Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough to contact the 0800 512012 freephone helpline so we can start to improve the energy efficiency of their homes AND save them money,"
