Finding Employment

Hand writing a letter

The vast majority of us, at various times in our life, are in a position where we are looking for employment.  Whether you are unemployed and looking for a job, or you are looking to change your current job, there are various agencies and resources to help you.

Government help

The Department for Work and Pensions (DfWP) operate Jobcentres across the country who are there to help you find or change your job.  They can not only identify potential jobs suitable to your skills, but they can also advise you about your career path, and training that you may wish to take up.

The Jobcentre can also offer advice about New Deal.  New Deal is a government initiative aimed at providing help and support, training, and job preparation to unemployed people who are claiming benefits.

Another useful service offered by the DfWP is Worktrain.  The Worktrain website provides job, training, learning and career profile searches with over 630 descriptions of jobs.

The Directgov website has a comprehensive employment section covering employment related topics for parents, over 50's and people with disabilities.

Job hunting locally

As a first port of call you could try our jobs page for details of jobs available with Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council.  The jobs pages are updated regularly so be sure to check back often.  You could also try the Shropshire County Council's job page for details of a range of vacancies, including jobs in education, jobs in the community, and jobs working for the County Council.

All of the jobs that have been advertised in the Shropshire Star can be found on their website at http://www.starjobfinder.co.uk/

You can also find a list of Recruitment Agencies in Shrewsbury in the online Yellow Pages.

Employment related advice and support for disabled people is available through Enable, a supported employment service for people with disabilities in the Shropshire area.

Job hunting online

There are numerous job websites that you can use to help you find a job.  Most sites can send you email updates of available jobs based on the location/keyword that you have specified, and a great number will allow you to store your CV and contact details online so that potential employers and recruitment agencies can contact you.
