Wroxeter Roman City

Wroxeter was the fourth largest city in Roman Britain. Believed to have been first settled by the Roman army in c AD48, the city’s original purpose was to serve as a legionary fortress, though it later developed into a civilian populated city, where workers, merchants and retired soldiers would live. Roads, houses and trading stalls surrounded it. An impressive feature of Wroxeter’s Roman city is the huge wall in its heart, dividing the second century municipal baths from the soldiers’ exercise hall. Visitors are also invited to our museum, where they can continue to gain some deeper insight on the culture of this great city, as well as viewing a varied range of interesting artifacts.
