WILLOW PLANTATION COMMUNITY WOODLAND PROJECT
Over 500 hundred willows have been planted next to the Rea Brook in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury. They were selected and purchased by the Shropshire Group of the National Council of Plants & Gardens as a millennium project, and the Community Woodland is now managed with the assistance of Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council's Countryside Unit.

Members of the public recently enjoyed a "Willow Weaving" event, organised by the Countryside Unit, and where "willow expert" Jake Haynes demonstrated the traditional craft of willow coppicing, and then weaving the sticks into a hurdle or garden plant tripod. The event was one of an ongoing series, and future activities include a "Wild Easter Egg Hunt!", a St George's Day Hedgerows event, Wildlife Bingo and a Dip Into Spring event especially for children.
The Countryside Unit was set up in 1990 to help bring about the joint objectives of conserving the rich wildlife and countryside in and around Shrewsbury, and to improve opportunities for people to enjoy and appreciate their natural heritage through quiet recreation and participation. They manage a network of Countryside Heritage Sites, and Community Woodlands, and organise a year-round programme of countryside events including guided walks, a summer play scheme and tree planting.
