News: Shrewsbury's Double Victory For Great Britain

Shrewsbury underlined its reputation as a town of flowers with remarkable victories for the UK in two prestigious international floral community competitions this weekend. Even more remarkable were the circumstances under which the accolades were achieved. Read the full story.

Portfolio Holder for Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council commented:
The Gold award in the Prestigious Entente Florale Europe Competition and the Winner in the Communities in Bloom International Challenge is the highlight of our bloom success.  We have successfully achieved gold awards in The Heart of England competitions and after winning the Royal Horticultural Society National in Bloom Competition 2006 Shrewsbury has carried the responsibility of representing the UK both in Europe and Internationally.

To receive such awards is the highest accolade for our County Town and demonstrates Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough's commitment to providing a quality environment for our residents, communities and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.

Entente Florale

The judging by the jury members for Entente Florale Europe and Communities in Bloom took place on 24th and 27th July 2007 respectively.

Each day commenced with a formal presentation by the Mayor, Chief Executive and Chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom. This was then followed by an extensive tour of the town and its suburbs where the judges were given the opportunity to meet many members of the community and to see for themselves the community, environmental and horticultural standards for assessment against the competition crtiteria.

The Chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom, Stan Sedman, stated
"It was a great honour to show both teams of jury members around our wonderful town, which on this occasion was representing Great Britain in both of these prestigious competitions. We had produced an extensive and varied programme for the day which enabled them to meet many residents and to witness the high standards that exist throughout the whole of our community. In my opinion we could not have done any better and met every aspect of the criteria."

Every year we strive for excellence within the floral aspects of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council.

Through these pages we hope to share with you all our progress, and many community projects, throughout the garden year.
