Finding a School
There are currently over 40,000 pupils educated in 167 schools in Shropshire. When choosing the right school for your child, you may wish to consider a number of factors such as location, performance, curriculum, or religious denomination.
Before looking for a school, you may wish to learn more about the education system to understand your Key-Stages from your GCSEs, and your NVQs from your A-levels. The Department for Education and Skills have produced The Parent Centre, a very informative and easy to use website that is intended as a reference book about the education system. You can browse information organised into age categories, and learn about the curriculum and assessment relevant to your child.
Directgov also contains a school section that covers areas such as the national curriculum, school life, special educational needs, and bullying.
Finding a school in your area
Using our 'My Neighbourhood' feature you can enter your address to find links to maps (provided by Shropshire County Council) showing local schools in your area.
You can also use our online mapping facility to see school catchment areas for Primary and Secondary Schools. This information is provided by Shropshire County Council.
Shropshire County Council website also lists all of the Primary, Secondary, and Special Schools in the county and gives a summary of each. In addition, links to the Ofsted report for each school are provided.
The Directgov website has a school search facility where you can search for schools by name, by town, or by your postcode. Details of schools are displayed together with a map of the area around the school.
The Independant Schools Council provides details of independant schools around the country. Their website includes details of subjects taught, facilities, activities, pupil numbers as well as contact details.
Applying for a school place
School applications can be made online through the Shropshire County Council admissions pages. Parents can apply online for school places when their child first starts school, and also when they transfer to secondary school.
Performance
Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) is a government department responsible for helping improve the standard of education and childcare through regular inspection of all 24,000 schools in England. Ofsted publish their reports online so you can see how any given school has performed academically, as well as reading the opinions of the inspection team with regard to school management, school achievements, school/parent relationships, pupil development and much more.
Ofsted reports for Shropshire local education authority can be accessed on their website.
National Tests (SATS)
National Tests, more commonly known as SATS, are tests undertaken by children being educated in schools following the National Curriculum at ages 7, 11 and 14. They are used to show progress of the children and helps secondary schools place them into appropriate learning groups. The DfES (Department for Education and Skills) publishes searchable results of school performance on their website.
