Updating and Screening Assessment

The Shropshire Air Quality Management Group (SAQMG) commissioned Casella Stanger to carry out an Updating and Screening Assessment (USA) of air pollution in the county.  The USA is required under Part IV of the 1995 Environment Act.

The USA looked into the seven key pollutants laid out in the Environment Act.  Using detailed mathematical modelling techniques it assessed the likelihood that the objectives for these pollutants will be met.

The work confirms that the main source of air pollution in Shropshire is from motor vehicles.

The main findings from the USA with regards to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough are that:

The background concentrations and probability of exceeding national air quality objectives for Benzene, 1,2-Butadiene, Lead and Carbon monoxide are very low.
There has been an increased output of Sulphur Dioxide at Ironbridge Power station which has led to some exceedences for the 15 minute objective for SO2.
There is continued exceedances of objectives for NO2 associated with road traffic congestion which requires further work to be undertaken.
Monitoring of PM10 shows some exceedances of the daily mean objective associated with the Bayston Hill Quarry which requires further assessment.
