About Me
I try to do a lot in the ward and councils. I don’t hold surgeries, as I find walking around and talking to residents is more friendly and helpful.
I am the Borough, (SABC for short) and County councillor for the Harlescott ward until 2009.
Elections for the new Unitary authority (all Shropshire) will take place in May 2009, there will be no local elections in Shropshire this year.
I belong to or have an interest in the following organisations, I am a volunteer and therefore not paid:
- Governor of 3 schools (The Grange, Grange Junior & Mount Pleasant Junior)
- Board member of Dial a Ride
- Royal Airforce Association (President)
- Harlescott Community Centre (President)
- Shrewsbury Athletics Association (President)
- SHARKS – Swimming club for disabled and those with learning difficulties. (President)
- Supporter of the Autistic Society and Dyslexic Association
- Committee member of the Shropshire Youth
- Committee member of the Grange Junior Sports Group.
- Committee member of the Shropshire pre-school Learning Alliance
- Harlescott toy lending library (Chairperson of the committee)
- Supporter of the senior citizens forum.
I try to go to as many meetings as possible but sometimes they clash with other responsibilities.
I am a great supporter of moto-cross and I’m keen to see a few practice tracks for enthusiasts. I hate motor bikes but I feel this is a wonderful, challenging family orientated sport, hence my keen support!
How I became a Councillor
People in the ward often ask me how I became councillor for Harlescott when I live in Longden, the other side of Shrewsbury (a 14 mile round trip).
Here goes…
When we came to live in Shrewsbury I was looking after my elderly Aunt. We lived in Lower Common and I joined the small conservative branch in Stapleton. I ended up on the Constituency Executive as their rep, May elections loomed and I agreed to stand as a ‘paper’ candidate “in a ward where I would never get elected”!
Doing a little canvassing I got hooked on Harlescott and fought for 2 years to get elected. I succeeded in 1993 by a majority of 5 votes! I have refused to stand anywhere else nearer home.
For 26 years (with 2 breaks) I have been your councillor, defeating 2 people along the way, both instances the year after they’d got me out!

The people of the ward have taught me a lot over the years, THANK YOU. I have many friends amongst you.
