Shrewsbury Museums Service is responsible for the management of Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery (Rowley's House), Shrewsbury Castle and Coleham Pumping Station.

The Shropshire Regimental Museum has a licence agreement with the Borough to run a museum inside the Castle, which also serves as a venue for civil marriages and hosts a wide variety of events in the grounds through the summer.

Between them, the museums attract 55,000 visitors per annum 'through the door', with many thousands more taking advantage of the award-winning website http://www.darwincountry.org/. As part of a new and extremely successful commitment to linking historic collections and contemporary art, Shrewsbury Museums Service organised in 2001 its most successful event ever, the showing in St. Mary's Church of 'Field for the British Isles', by Antony Gormley, which attracted 27,000 visitors and national media attention.

Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery is becoming increasingly squeezed for space, particularly following the sale of Clive House, while the historic buildings cannot meet modern access requirements. A feasibility study into the development of the museum was undertaken by architectural and museum consultants in 2000 and offers and members are now actively considering how this process may be taken forward.
