Destination Shrewsbury

The Destination Shrewsbury Service seeks to maintain a buoyant local economy both within Shrewsbury and in the wider rural area. It works in partnership with many agencies to secure funding for projects, commissioning studies, and in attracting new investment to the Borough.

There is a close working with the Shrewsbury Town Centre Management Partnership which is a public/private partnership concerned with the support and growth of Shrewsbury. In February 2001, the Borough Council was awarded Beacon Council Status for town centre regeneration and this reflects the commitment of the Borough Council and the Town Centre Management Partnership in working together to tackle problems and improve Shrewsbury Town Centre. The Shrewsbury Town Centre Strategy is in preparation, which will be a visionary exercise to define what sort of place Shrewsbury will be in 15 to 20 years' time.

The Service works closely with the Shropshire Partnership and has successfully secured single regeneration budget funding for tackling the social and economic disadvantages of north Shrewsbury. The Shropshire Investment Bureau is also supported by the Borough Council which is a countywide agency aimed at securing inward investment. There is close working with Advantage West Midlands, the regional development agency, particularly in the rural regeneration zone which includes parts of the Borough.

The Economic Development Service has also been involved in a number of other key projects and studies such as the West End Regeneration Strategy and the Ditherington Flax Mill.

Tourism

The Tourism Service includes the Tourist Information Centre located in the Music Hall and support for a satellite TIC at the Shropshire Wildlife Trust premises in Abbey Foregate. The Tourism and Marketing service is involved in a wide range of marketing and promotion campaigns to encourage visitors to Shrewsbury and in support to businesses involved in the tourism industry.

Town Centre Management

Working with the operational guidance of the Board of Shrewsbury Town Centre Management Partnership.

The aims of the Town Centre Management are to bring together the public, private and community sectors for the economic, social benefits and advancement of 'Shrewsbury'.

A strong 'partnership' ethos is at the heart of our work undertaken by S.T.C.M.P and the abiding objective is always to SOLVE problems not just SURVIVE them, while contributing to the strengthening of the local economy and increasing the profile of Shrewsbury as the regional centre - the CAPITAL of the BORDER COUNTIES.
