Why Register?

The Register of Electors is published annually and it is a requirement of law that householders should complete a form and return it to the Electoral Registration Officer annually.  (Regulation 23 of the Representation of the People Regulations 2001).

Any person failing to comply with the request for registration information or giving false information is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1,000.

The main reason for registering, is so that you can vote at elections.  You will only be able to vote if your name appears on the Register of Electors for a particular election.

A lesser-known reason for being registered, but equally as important, is to ensure eligibility for loans, mortgages and other credit facilities.  Banks, building societies, credit companies and large stores require potential customers to be on the Register of Electors before approving credit applications.  If anyone is not registered, this can often cause frustration and delays for the customer.

Whilst the Council can provide customers with a "confirmation of registration" letter to prove that they are on the Register, in line with other local authorities, a charge of £10 will be levied for the supply of such information.

Application Forms to register are available direct from the Electoral Services Office (tel. 01743 - 281145) or are downloadable via this link:-  www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
