      Elections - Forward Plan

      Scheduled local elections usually take place on the first Thursday in May.  A poll will only take place if there are more candidates than there are seats available for that area.
       
      UK Parliament is elected for a maximum period of five years.  However, the Prime Minister may request the Monarch to dissolve Parliament any time within that term, forcing an election to be held.  When a Parliamentary election takes place on the same day as combined district and parish elections, the parish elections are postponed for three weeks.
       
      Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council always elected by thirds, but once Unitary Status is introduced, elections will be on a four-yearly cycle.  The anticipated election timetable is as set out below.

      Spring 2009 

      (1)  European Parliamentary Elections

      (2)  Unitary Elections:

      Elections for the new Shropshire Council will be held.  These will be "all out" elections throughout the new Shropshire Unitary Boundaries, when all the Councillors representing the new unitary authority will be elected.  

      The new Polling Districts are being drafted at present and all registered electors within the current Shrewsbury and Atcham Constituency will be polled.

      (3)  Parish Elections:

      Parish Elections which were due to take place in May 2008 but subsequently cancelled by the Shropshire (Structural Change) Order 2008, will now take place as part of the Spring 2009 Election Timetable, as follows:-

      • Alberbury with Cardeston
      • Pontesbury (Asterley, Cruckton, Habberley, Plealey and Pontesbury Wards)
      • Ford
      • Minsterley
      • Westbury (Westbury and Yockleton Wards)

      In addition, the following Parish Councils which were due to have elections in 2010, will have their current period of office shortened by one year.  They will also have elections at the same time:-

      • Acton Burnell, Pitchford, Frodesley, Ruckley & Langley
      • All Stretton, Smethcott and Woolstaston
      • Buildwas
      • Cardington
      • Church Preen, Hughley and Kenley
      • Church Pulverbatch
      • Condover (Condover, Dorrington, Ryton and Stapleton Wards)
      • Cound
      • Cressage, Harley and Sheinton
      • Leebotwood and Longnor
      • Leighton & Easton Constantine
      • Wroxeter & Uppington

      The period of office for all Parish Councillors elected during May 2009 will be for four years.

       

      May 2013

      (1)  Unitary Elections

      (2)  Parish Elections:

      Parish Councils which had elections in May 2007 should have been due to hold their next scheduled elections in May 2011.  However, due to the Shropshire (Structural Change) Order 2008, they will have their current period of office extended until 2013.  Those Parish Councils are:-

      • Astley
      • Atcham
      • Bayston Hill
      • Berrington
      • Bicton
      • Bomere Heath (Albrighton, Bomere Heath, Fitz, Leaton and Preston Gubbals Wards)
      • Great Hanwood
      • Great Ness
      • Little Ness
      • Longden (Hook-A-Gate and Longden Wards)
      • Montford
      • Uffington
      • Upton Magna
      • Withington

      The period of office for all Parish Councillors elected during May 2013 will be for four years.
