Young Carers - Support & Advice

If you look after someone with a disability, long term illness or health problems the following information should be helpful to you. There are organisations which can provide funding, support and advice if you need it.

National Help

Young Carers - A support group dedicated to young carers, with discussion boards, blogs and plenty of advice and guidance.
 
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers is the largest provider of comprehensive carers support services in the UK.
 
BBC GCSE BiteSize - One area where young carers often suffer is education, the BBC education service can help you to organise your workload and help you with your exams.
 
Connexions - General careers advice and how to make the right decisions for you, including a Carers Job database.
 
Childline - ChildLine is the free helpline for children and young people in the UK. Children and young people can call on 0800 1111 to talk about any problem – counsellors are always here to help you sort it out.

Local Help

British Young Carers Project

The British Red Cross Shropshire Young Carers Project provides support and information for young people across the County aged 5-18 years. 
 
There are around 175,000 young carers in the United Kingdom.  It is estimated that there are 800 young carers within Shropshire.
 
Young carers are children or young people under the age of 18 who care for a sick or disabled relative, including someone who has mental health or drug and alcohol misuse issues.
 
A young carer may also care for their brother(s) or sister(s), maybe because one or both parents are no longer around.
 
The British Red Cross Shropshire Young Carers Project offers support and fun activities to help make life easier by providing:
  • Practical and emotional support
  • Befriending, this may be on a one to one basis
  • Advocacy
  • Advice and Information
  • Social Activities
  • Short breaks
