Urban Safety Initiatives

The Community Development Officer, Nicola Fisher, works closely with the three urban safety initiatives currently working in the Borough.  They are at Harlescott, Meole Brace and Springfield and Sutton.  There is a new Rural Safety Initiative at Ford.  These community based groups comprise residents from the area working with partner agencies such as the Police, the Borough and County Council, Severnside Housing and others to tackle low grade crime such as anti-social behaviour graffiti, litter and vandalism.  The group also is in a position to tackle the fear of crime, which can be very disabling especially for elderly people living in relative isolation in these areas.  The safety initiatives, via public meetings, questionnaires and local representatives map areas causing trouble.  They assess the level of disruption and seek to find solutions to such problems as persistent graffiti tagging, litter dropping and fly tipping.  The groups are also in the position of being able to respond immediately to problems as they arise and ensuring that action is taken.

If you feel that an Urban Safety Initiative would be relevant to your area or you would like to be involved in the groups already running, please contact us.  Look out for the public meetings where you can have your say and see the results of the surveys undertaken by the groups.
