£50,000 Commission for Public Art in Harlescott
Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council invite applications from Artists for a major Public Art Commission.
'We want this to be a landmark piece of public art that will stand as a testimony to the regeneration of the northern corridor into Shrewsbury'.
Cllr Mrs Eileen Sandford MBE
The commission is part of the ongoing regeneration of the Harlescott area, which forms the northern 'industrial' corridor (A49) into Shrewsbury.
The location is at the cross roads where urban and industrial developments meet. The site was the former Shrewsbury Livestock Market and is now being redeveloped into the first sustainable Tesco supermarket in the UK.
The commission represents an opportunity for an Artist to connect current developments with a continuous strand of historic and social history. Harlescott played a strategic role in the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 and as the 'engine room' of the town it played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution.
Four short-listed artists will be given a development fee to work their ideas into a model of their proposed design. One Artist will be selected to receive the £50,000 Public Art commission.
