Shrewsbury's Arts Policy
The Vision
The arts inspire imagination and originality.
The arts play a pivotal role in revitalising communities and their environments, creating wealth and enhancing skills.
The arts celebrate both unity and difference, and belong to everyone in Shropshire, whatever their abilities or origins, and wherever they live.
The arts are vital for the people of Shrewsbury and Shropshire
Overall Aims
- To enable the arts to play a central role in enhancing the quality of life and supporting the regeneration of the borough
- To encourage and extend a network of partnerships with and between individuals, communities, organisations, agencies, businesses, education and Council services, in promoting the widest range of artistic activity by and for the borough and its communities.
The Policy Statement
- We will promote access and equality of opportunity to enjoy and participate in a broad range of creative activity, recognising the value of both local and visiting artists and programmes.
- We will work with and through local communities, groups, individuals, artists and arts organsiations, establishing appropriate mechanisms for discussion, consultation, information exchange, encouraging a partnership approach to arts development.
- We will work to help to raise the profile of the arts and promote the role and status of artists, arts organisations and arts programmes, appreciating the contribution they make to the social, cultural and economic well being of the borough.
- We will value existing resources for arts and cultural activity, and seek to maximise their potential, financially, artistically and in developing services, audiences and participants.
- We will continue to provide funds, to invest in and facilitate the arts, whether directly, through Council-owned and run activity, or indirectly, through provision of grants, Council resources, training programmes and other facilitating services.
- We will seek to support local needs and aspirations through a range of services including advisory, advocacy and investment.
- We will seek to attract funding and sponsorship to enhance existing provision and to establish new opportunities
- We will contribute to the overall corporate vision and aims of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and its partners.
