Following an assessment of Performance by the Government's Independent watchdog in April 2004, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council has been classed as an 'Excellent' Council by the Audit Commission.
Under the Government's Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) regime all Councils have to go through a rigorous inspection process and the Borough Council is one of just a few to be awarded the highest accolade.
The independent report that has been published today says that
"The Council is ambitious to build on its heritage and has a clear vision both to provide an increasing quality of life for its citizens but also to put the town more firmly on the map by developing facilities and an infrastructure appropriate to the 21st Century."
The report also notes "The strong officer capacity throughout the organisation and the Management Team and Cabinet leads from the front. Staff are enthusiastic and feel that they are being listened to.
Peter Nutting, Leader of the Council says
I am very proud of this Council, what we have achieved and our plans for the future. To be one of only two councils to achieve this high level in the West Midlands is an acknowledgement of just how far we have come. More importantly it enables our residents and business community to compare the Quality of Service Performance with others and make their own mind up about value for money. To be able to do all that we do and for such a low Council Tax is a credit to our excellent staff".
Robin Hooper, Chief Executive says
"This is a great achievement. For a long time now the Borough Council has been getting a reputation for punching above its weight in the West Midlands and even nationally. This has now been recognised through independent assessment.
"Things don't happen overnight but we do have a 'can do' culture and a determination to make things happen. As an organisation we have proved that we are open to challenge and willing to learn from others and from our own experiences. Credit is due to the Councillors who work so hard to deliver the improvements people want to see.
"This is a moment of great pride for me but also a time to acknowledge the challenges ahead and the effort it takes to perform at this level. All our staff are heroes, and through them we have the means to take the Council forward."
