Help with Using this Website
How do I find the help pages for the section I am using?
On every page you will see a 'Help' button on the horizontal navigation bar. Clicking this will bring you to the page that you currently find yourself on.
How can I move to a different area of the site?
We have designed information on the SABC website to be accessed in more than one way.
There are 3 ways to access information from our home page.
- The traditional menu on the left;
- The 'Online Services' buttons in the centre of the page;
- The 'Services for You' drop downs on the right.
SABC's site has been created after much consultation with members of our public. Before the re-design of our site we held a workshop which consisted of members representing the elderly, the young, Councillors, Businesses, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council employees and a professional web design company as well. Therefore we believe that the 'look and feel' of the site and the navigation is as customer focussed as possible.
We continue to address issues of Accessibility and Usability, working to ensure that the site is useful to as meny people as possible.

The textual information on the site should be accessible with virtually any browser, but for best results, and to see the site as we intended it, please see the notes below.

What if I don't have one of the recommended browsers?
This website has been designed to support as wide a variety of browser and operating system combinations as possible. Browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape Navigator 4 or those from other suppliers will allow the user to access the site and use the pages but might not display the site as designed, nor provide the user with the best experience of using the website. Most browser suppliers will allow you to upgrade for free, either because they don't charge for their browser or because you have bought a previous version. To upgrade your browser go to the supplier's web site and follow the instructions provided.
Why doesn't my browser display the web site properly?
In order to support as wide a range of browsers as possible and allow users of all abilities (including those with a visual impairment or physical disability) to access www.shrewsbury.gov.uk, the site has been developed according to recognised standards set down by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). One of these standards is for the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2) so that the site supports any browser that in turn supports this standard. Some browsers, particularly earlier versions, either do not, or only partially support, this standard. These browsers might not display the shrewsbury.gov.uk text and graphics properly.
Which screen resolution should I use for displaying shrewsbury.gov.uk?
The recommended minimum display settings for the shrewsbury.gov.uk pages are 800x600 and 16-bit colour (65,356 colours, or thousands of colours depending on your operating system). For information on adjusting the display resolution try the help files of your operating system or consult the manufacturer's website.
PDF files and Adobe Acrobat
Some webpages are not written in HTML but in a special format called Portable Data Format (PDF). Browsers cannot display PDF documents so you will need a plug-in program called Adobe Acrobat Reader. This program lets you magnify and find screen text. It is freely available from the Adobe website. The Adobe Acrobat Reader download is also commonly available on CD-ROMs and is often preloaded on computers.
What is a plug-in?
A plug-in is a program that enables a browser to access multimedia zones on the web. No plug-ins are needed to access shrewsbury.gov.uk, although some might be needed for accessing audio, video or special file formats on websites to which we link. Some external websites may offer you a download of the plug-in needed to view the site. Where this is the case you should receive clear instructions on screen. Be aware there may be legal and system requirements you need to satisfy.

Which screen resolution do you recommend for viewing Shrewsbury?
The recommended minimum display settings for the shrewsbury.gov.uk pages are 800x600 and 16-bit colour (65,356 colours or thousands of colours depending on your operating system).
Can I use screen magnification software?
Although some of the built-in features of the web browser that you use might be helpful, they do not offer the same level of access as the magnification software packages developed by specialist software suppliers. The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) website provides in-depth information for partially sighted web users.
I have very restricted vision. What are my options?
If you have little or no vision, the Internet can be accessed using a speaking browser and refreshable braille displays. A speaking browser reads aloud the contents of the entire website. Braille displays translate the site's content into braille, which can be read by touch. Visit the RNIB website for details of technology designed to help if you have a visual disability.
shrewsbury.gov.uk also has an 'Accessibility Settings' option which presents the website in high contrast text only, it also allows you to adjust the colours and text size to suit your needs. The 'Accessibility Settings' link can be found on the top left hand side of EVERY page.
