Unemployment

Being unemployed can be a difficult time; there may be factors to consider in addition to the task of finding employment, such as the financial and emotional implications of not working.

Help and advice

Your first and most immediate task may be to find another job.  Our Finding Employment section can point you in the right direction for job hunting and CV and interview tips.  The section gives information about government help when looking for a job, and provides links to numerous sites that can help and advise you.

Redundancy help is a site offering advice and guidance for anyone who has been made redundant.  The site details what redundancy means and outlines your rights as an employee, and your entitlement to redundancy pay.  Counselling and debt advice is provided as well as more help with job hunting and CV writing.

If you need advice about your legal standing, the Citizens Advice Bureaux is a great place to start.

If you feel you need emotional support, and would like to talk to someone about your situation in confidence, the Samaritans are available 24 hours a day.  Tel: 08457 909090, or email jo@samaritans.org.

Financial help

Under most circumstances, if you are unemployed and looking for work you are eligible to receive benefits, such as Jobseekers Allowance.  You can view the Jobcentre Plus website for more information about benefits you may be entitled to, or you can visit your local Jobcentre in person(please see our Finding Employment section for details of Jobcentres in Shrewsbury and Shropshire).

If you are unemployed you may also be entitled to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, please see our Benefits section for further details.
