Councillors. Judith Williams and John Hirst-Knight planting trees near the Battlefield Household Recycling Centre in North Shrewsbury. The trees were provided free of charge by the aluminium packaging industry as a reward for Shrewsbury and Atcham residents efforts to recycle Aluminium cans.
As part of the same scheme the Council has also donated some of the trees to a Tree Aid, a charity which helps grow the African economy with forestry projects. The trees will be planted in Burkina Faso, West Africa.
The Fruit Trees for Malawi Campaign

The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation Limited (Alupro) are running a Fruit Trees for Malawi campaign funded by the aluminium recycling schemes nationwide.
Alupro's new huge recycling programme, starting July 1st 2007 focuses on tackling deforestation in Africa while providing the means and know-how to develop small businesses in rural communities in Malawi. They are working wtih Ripple Africa, a small UK charity that knows the area it works in well, and understands how best to aid local people in helping themselves at a time of massive global change. They shall ensure that a tree will be grown for every tonne of aluminium cans and foil recycled in the UK- a fruit tree which will provide good food as well as the basis for fruit drying and juicing enterprises adding value to the crop as the trees mature.
Environmental film-maker Charlotte Uhlenbroek has just launched the campaign to grow fruit trees in Malawi. The High Commissioner of Malawi also attended the event, and is totally supportive of the project.
How do I recycle my cans? Aluminium cans can be recycled at the kerbside and placed in the green box for collection. Please rinse them out before placing them out for collection. Alternatively bring large quanitities of cans to your local bring bank.
With a fruit tree being grown for every tonne of aluminium recycled Shrewsbury needs to drastically improve its can recycling rates in order to make a difference to communities in Malawi.
So get can recycling- it now has a double benefit!
THANK YOU! Keep up the recycling and we will be able to plant more free trees in Shrewsbury and in Africa next year.
