Sport Factsheet: Fishing

Introduction

The river in Shrewsbury is well used for recreational purposes and the length from Welsh Bridge through to the end of Sydney Avenue are all used by pedestrians on the pathways and limited number of rowing boats and small craft ply the stretches above English Bridge.
Consequently, anglers are encouraged to show the attitude they expect to receive.
Litter, including discarded nylon and hooks, is most definitely prohibited, as are of course lead weights.

Shropshire Anglers Federation is the body responsible for about 3,000 permit holders who use waters local to Shrewsbury. The Federation is responsible to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council who is the riparian owner of the waters around Shrewsbury. The Federation is also responsible for the enforcement of  by-laws and the collection of revenues, through annual and day Permit sales through local tackle shops, Bank Permits are also available via Bailiffs.

There are a number of tackle shops in the town, which issue permits and are happy to advise on local conditions.
