BYELAWS MADE ON 24TH SEPTEMBER 1970 FURTHER AMENDING BYELAW 17 OF BYELAWS
RELATING TO HACKNEY CARRIAGES

HACKNEY CARRIAGES

Made under Section 68 of the Town Police Clauses Act 1847, and Section 171 of the Public Health Act 1875, by the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough of Shrewsbury, acting by the Council with respect to Hackney Carriages in the said Borough


Byelaw 17 of the series of byelaws with respect to Hackney Carriages made by the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough of Shrewsbury, acting by the Council, on the 16th day of October 1959, and confirmed by one of Her Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State on the 26th day of November 1959 as amended by the byelaw made by the said Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses on the 22nd day of October 1965 and confirmed by one of Her Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State on the 21st day of December 1965 is hereby repealed and replaced by the following byelaw, which shall be read and construed as one with the series aforesaid:-

1. The proprietor or driver of a hackney carriage shall be entitled to demand and take for the hire of the carriage the rate or fare prescribed by the following table, the rate or fare being calculated by distance unless the hirer express at the commencement of the hiring his desire to engage by time.

Provided always that where a hackney carriage furnished with a taximeter shall be hired by distance the proprietor or driver thereof shall not be entitled to demand and take a fare greater than that recorded on the face of the taximeter save for any extra charges authorised by the following table which it may not be possible to record on the face of the taximeter.

2. Notwithstanding the preceding provisions of this byelaw, in the case of a hackney carriage furnished with a taximeter as aforesaid the fares recorded in new pennies may, if the hirer so wishes, be paid before 15th Feburary 1971 in shillings and pence in accordance with a conversion table approved by the Council.

3. Before 15th February 1971 a clearly legible notice shall be displayed in a hackney carriage furnished with a taximeter as aforesaid informing hirers of the effect of paragraph 2 of this byelaw and setting out the said table.

  1. For hirings begun between 11.00 p.m. and 7.00 a.m.

  2. For each article of luggage conveyed outside the passenger compartment of the carriage

  3. For each person in excess of two (children under five years of age exempt)

  4. For each basket or receptacle containing once or more animals

  5. For each animal not in a basket or receptacle

50% of the above rate or fare
